As Bold As

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The official England band
Played tunes I could understand
As time went on it became like canned
laughter;
annoying, an irritant, a reminder
Englands results could have been kinder

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 As we came home
The band played on

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 A backdrop to failure, the soundtrack to loss
For years England won no more than a toss
The band would play The Great Escape
The barndoors untouched, England lost shape
We had no more than a ball and some grass
Our thanks go to the band, mainly of brass
But it’s finally time to let go of the past

Notes

Following ‘Still Possible…Play On!’ by Crispin Thomas.

When Roy Hodgson became England manager, it felt lke a new start. At the last friendly against Belgium, I was struck by how outdated the band suddenly sounded, playing the same tunes they’d played for twenty years. When their instruments were taken away at the France game I wasn’t sorry. After years of facing the music, it’s time for England to find their rhythm.
