Away Days 2

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Nothing new about Molineux
in the early eighties except
the new stand in which we watched
the action miles from the pitch.
Massed ranks of Town fans
standing on the South Bank,
craning their necks to catch
a glimpse of their heroes:
Rowland, Tucker, Alan Mayes,
Allan, Miller, Ray McHale.
Town sitting on slender 2-1 lead
from the first leg,
but Richards struck twice
and Swindon succumbed;
glum faces as we trudged home,
Mayes’ cut mouth a bloody reminder
of a brutal night at Molineux.

Notes

We’re off to watch the Town at Wolves tomorrow, a match which is certain to bring back memories of a painful night over 30 years ago when we came so close to Wembley.
