Squaddies in khaki,
On the beach head killing field
Seventy years on
Thinking hard of comrades gone,
Hard earned medals proudly worn.

The centre forwards
Of the teams drive into France,
Push against the sand
Of the Normandy beaches
And the strong German front line

Very hard first half
Friends falling by the wayside
And no substitutes
To alleviate the pain
Of your mate being fouled

Second half still hard
But the forward line prevailed
Allowing defence
To establish firm foothold
In Normandy’s country lanes.

Seventy years passed,
And old soldiers visit friends
Who fell at their side
Letting you and me today
Write these words to say “thank you”
