Barking Mad

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I always wanted to write football poems,
Just had that feeling down in my bones,
Gnawing away, an ambition and dream,
So I wrote about Barking, my favourite team.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 When I showed my Dad he said, “Oh dear me,
You could be barking up the wrong tree…”
What Dad didn’t know, but it’s for sure,
Their most famous ex-player is Bobby Moore!

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Founded in 1880, they wear royal blue,
Have topped their leagues, won knockout cups too,
In years when their bite was worse than their bark,
Winning matches was just like a walk in the park.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 So come on and join me supporting ‘The Blues’,
Singing their praises, spreading good news,
On the internet too, with every man and his dog,
Then Barking will be the ‘new kids on the blog’.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 I’d like to go to their ground and watch a match,
Hoping that my team would come up to scratch,
That’s the end of my tale and of this verse,
Which is only doggerel for better or worse!

Notes

Barking FC play in the Essex Senior Football League. Their home ground is Mayesbrook Park in Dagenham. The captain of England’s 1966 World Cup winning team, the late Bobby Moore, played for Barking A (third) team as a young boy before being signed by West Ham United.
