Where did they go, those bobble hats
That used to match our scarves
It’s fully expected that fans were affected
By eager knitters making garb of two halves
(three sleeves and four fingers)

Dropped stitches on woolly pitches
Dropped points all over the show
It started as a scarf but covered all eventualities
With the aid of a yard of Velcro

Bobble hats on every head
Pom-poms wobbled to cheer a lead
Every Christmas a bobble hat
A winter warmer, yes indeed

Granny knitted a hat for everyone
Except that is for me
I wore something on my head
It used to keep warm the tea

It had a slit to let the handle through
Which came in handy so that I could breathe
A spout hole for the eye in the back of my head
And “Home Sweet Home” in the weave

No beanies, no bonnets, no jester hats
Bobble hats replaced the old flat caps
Stewards all but replaced the bobbies too
Those authoritative, statuesque respected chaps
(the bobbies obviously, not the stewards)

Real proper Bobbies had tall helmets to wear
What was under their hat? We were stupid enough to ask
Risking a clip round the ear hole
We thought it was sandwiches and a flask

But no, in those days before the internet
Before “Love Story” spawned endless rom-coms
Policeman were just like us under their helmets
They wore knitted hats topped off with pom-poms
