At the age of ten,
whilst on holiday in Bristol visiting relatives,
my dad took my Bristolian cousin and me
to watch my first football match:
Bristol City v York City.

my dad asked,
‘What do you think the score will be?’
My cousin said,
‘Ten nil to Bristol City.’
I said,
‘I don’t know.’

The Bristol City fans sang,
‘When the red red robins go bob bob bobbing along.’

we bought pies, which were rotten.
Second half
it rained.

‘What you got to do in football is
take the ball into the box
and let them foul you for a penalty.’
