Criticise? Moi?

The pronouncement has been uttered
And been passed down through the ranks.
The Eircom League’s bread’s buttered
And the clubs should show some thanks.
The FAI headquarters
Issued warnings dire and grave
Not to stir up muddy waters
And to learn how to behave.

The FAI has spoken,
It won’t tolerate dissent.
The rules must not be broken
By default or by intent.
The programmes must not slander
And the websites must refrain
Frrom repeating propaganda
That cuts deep against the grain.

The fines are quite substantial
If you do not play the game.
A punishment financial
Is the only way, they claim.
Should we bite the hand that feeds us,
Be disloyal and begrudge?
Or, say, praise our mighty leaders
If they vacillate and fudge?

But the edict is quite puzzling
Because everyone’s aware
There’s no need for blanket muzzling
And the inf’rence is unfair.
For we love our suited masters
Silhouetted ‘gainst the sky
And we fear they have miscast us
As malevolent and sly.

They are honest and hard-working
In the way the League is run,
Never failing, never shirking
From the work that must be done.
Though bad people might assail them
And go past that broken line,
God preserve we’ll ever fail them
And incur a hefty fine.
