Dreamland to Nightmaresville

For there be somewhere
A land where I would go
Where there would be football pitches
Of pristine green
No lumps, no bumps
No bullies, no thumps
A place, where the touchlines would be sugar coated
Where there would be colleagues and opponents
All of equal talent
And the games would be competitive
Tight, but fun
Furiously fought, but with gentlemanly conduct
And a womans touch
For they would partake, on an equal footing
And the darkest forces, would be the persons in black
Who would adjudicate with honour and precision
Allowing free flowing passages of play, with no indecision
A place where there would be no managers or coaches
Or men with magic sponges
No call for substitutes
For tackles would be hard but fair
And skills proliferate
And at the gate
Thousands upon thousands, of appreciative fans
Would enter for free
And sing the sweetest songs, in praise of one and all
Applauding the colourful mix of skins, in plain but kindred kit
A logo free land, where hate is a hollow word – empty of meaning
And the only keening
Is for
THE BAD OLD DAYS
OF KEEPING UP, DESPITE THE JONES’S – VINNIE & JOEY
NORMAN ‘BITE YER LEGS’ HUNTER
JACKIE CHARLTON WORKING THRU HIS LITTLE BLACK BOOK
TOMMY SMITH, CHOPPER HARRIS
SOUNESS, MARK DENNIS
DENNIS ‘THE MENACE’ WISE
‘ARRY CRIPPS, TERRY HURLOCK
RATTIN, GENTILE, SIMEONE
SCHUMACHER, GOIKOETXEA
CANTONA, COLLARED YET UNCUFFED
BRIAN CLOUGH, KEN BATES, JESUS GIL
THE DEVILS FROM SEETHING RED DEPTHS
NASTY – BUT PERHAPS, A NECESSARY EVIL?
