It breaks your heart this football game
Left chasing shadows in the dark
But lace your boots and grab the shirt
And pick your dreams up off the park

Your toes are frozen to the concrete
Your voice is hoarse and needs a drink
Your hopes are stripped of all belief
Will you back? Of course you will

A rollercoaster ups and downs
Part of life win lose and draw
Sometimes your name is on the Cup
Sometimes your hopes fall through the floor

The promised land still there tomorrow
History’s lessons we could learn
What goes around comes back to greet us
“It’s just a game” but God it hurts

Yes the losses ache like hell lads
We’d pack it in if we just could
But cold turkey has us cornered
Football grabs you like a drug

So pick your wishes off the tarmac
Smooth them down wipe off the dirt
A win next week and all’s forgotten
The tears despair and yes the hurt

For when this football match is over
And we all head off home again
It matters not the points we’ve scored
But how well we’ve played the game.
