I didn’t know you Gary Speed
No, you didn’t know me too
But ‘Your’ death touched me deep within
So I penned these words for you

Handsome brave and skilful,
The Welshman had it all
He loved his family, wife, and kids,
But oh! He loved football!

His dedication held no bounds
A manager’s dream they say
His proud dad travelled far and wide
Just to watch his play

His stature and his standing grew
From an early age
His lethal foot and heading skills
Adorned each sporting page

From Local pride, to premiership
His football story grew
Cups and trophies held aloft
Professional through and through

National captaincy bestowed
Success and Glory came
With self effacing vibrancy
He shone in every game
¶ 8

A true friend to so many
He nurtured deep respect
From Elland Road to Millennium
There were none he would neglect
¶ 9

His decency and honesty
Aligned with football skill
Endeared him to each one and all
And none would bear him ill

A father son and husband
His family came first
A loving wife and two young sons
Pride about to burst

Then Hanging high his golden boots
He sought not to retire
To guide and manage those like him
He set his sights much higher
¶ 12

Considered not an obvious choice
He took hold the poison chalice
To stir our land with sweet success
Adoration flowed, not malice
¶ 13

A future bright, the dragon roared
Gary at its reins
A world cup to look forward to
To build on recent gains
¶ 14

Then all was lost; he took his life
The last Sunday of November
Grief outpoured across the land
But we always will remember
¶ 15

A man who smiled, a man who cared
A man not above his station
A man who wore the Red of Wales
A credit to his Nation
