1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Got a big game tomorrow.
Been thinking about it
all week, preparing myself
mentally and physically,
and now I’m psyched up
battle ready.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 That extra half-hour
in training, extra two
gym sessions, even those
improptu kick-abouts, taking
on all-comers on the estate –
it all counts. All gives me the edge.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 This is the one that counts
the one we have to win
to get to the semis,
don’t think about the semis though,
the nerves will kill you,
keep your mind on this game.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 I’m keeping goal
which is a rugby post
and it’s been half an hour
now and nobody’s scored and
in my head I hear my coach ranting:
move faster, anticipate, read the shot,
hang on, this cross is yours,
watch the front post, catch it!
you had it covered, go for the quick release
no,no take your time – the outfield’s tiring.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 And I know this isn’t the same
as what Sunday will bring
but I know that I’m ready
as I will be.

Notes

We got to play the cup quarter-finals tomorrow. I’ve been training hard all week and pestering anyone who I can to take shots at me – now it’s the day before the game and so it’s a “rest-day” and there’s nothing else I can do except try not to get nervous.
