Goal Machine

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Boots over his shoulder, one time office clerk
Bright young man of 20 strolling through the park
On his way to Ayresome, living out the dream
Playing centre forward for his local football team

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Goals were this lad’s business, poaching was his game
Scoring by the dozen on his way to fame
Grabbing all the headlines, stirring up the crowd
Mixing it with hard men, bloody but unbowed

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Never ducked a tackle, never threw it in
Never stopped competing till a draw became a win
Always put his head there, always had a go
Always 90 minutes and he always stole the show

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Looking back in wonder, deep down memory lane
Matchdays in the Holgate, sunshine through the rain
Five years sheer brilliance, never quite enough
The legend in my lifetime that was Boro’s Brian Clough.

Notes

Cloughie was a brave and talented centre forward – he was my hero.
