I made it to the top
and when you’re there you never dream
It’s ever going to stop
and just like when you’ve drunk your fill
the feeling is euphoric
Hello my name is Jimmy Greaves
and I’m an alcoholic

they love you and they leave you
and if you hide your darker side
they somehow still believe you
I started with the Youth team
the rise was meteoric
I never thought I’d fall this low
now I’m an alcoholic

I dread it when it’s over
the biggest nightmare I once had
was dreaming I was sober
my kidneys aren’t a pretty sight
my liver’s catastrophic
I’ll have to face the problem soon
that I’m an alcoholic

I know we’ve met before
but yes before I stagger off
I might have just one more
they say I’m lively when I drink
and not so melancholic
I’d stand up but I’d fall back down
I’m just an alcoholic

Notes

Jimmy Greaves at 70 this week (19.2.10) and now hopefully off drink for good. To illustrate the dangers of drink facing top players , this piece was written for the Chelsea FC ‘Education Through Football’ Programme in conjunction with Westmister Archives for use in schools and at the Hub Study Centre.My thanks again to Peter Daniel for the inspiration.
