I’m Not A Keeper

I used to play defender but I didn’t like it much
I tried to be a striker but I barely got a touch
At training, there’s no goalie, so we all take a turn
But I stopped the captain’s thunderbolt and now there’s no return.

The tournament was coming; still no keeper had arrived
I played in goal the first game and it seems that I survived
In fact, I quite enjoyed it, but I keep up my pretence
And say I’m not a keeper – so I’m moved into defence.

Well I lost count of the goals they scored, I played like I was blind
So when Coach says I’m back in goal, I actually don’t mind
If we lose, we wave goodbye to any chances of the Cup
I think: “I’m not a keeper”, but who would back me up?

I’m playing like a superstar! I’m player of the match!
I’m van der Sar, I’m Dudek – I improve with every catch
We overcame the odds to win despite a clueless ref
I say I’m not a keeper, but my team-mates have gone deaf.

We’re up against the champions now; win, and we’ll go through
I dream I score the winner but I know it won’t come true
‘Cause I sense what’s coming just before the gloves land at my feet
I begin: “I’m not….” then see the coach’s face and know defeat.
