INTERNATIONAL WOMENS’ DAY AND FOOTBALL

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 So, Marx and Engels,
You are men!
And so, the Duchess of Sutherland,
You were a woman
Who kicked 15,000 people off their land,
To replace them with sheep –
What would she have thought of History
As the history of class struggle?
What would she have thought of International Womens’ Day,
Commemorating the New York women textile strikes
Of March 8th. 1908?
What would she have thought of the Red Women F.C.’s slogan,
“The liberation struggle of the working class woman footballer
Cannot be, as it is for the bourgeois female fan and player,
A struggle against the men of her own class.”?

Notes

I am sometimes nicknamed Sally “Little” Dorrity. on account of my love of Charles Dickens and because I am only 4 inches tall. I sometimes wonder if I am the only eponymous diminutive radical female football poet around.
