It’s a fix, if it ain’t 66

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Eleven men, good and true
And such a belligerent leader, too
Proved beyond doubt, what only Winnie knew
That never before, have so many, owed so much, to so few

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 And so it was, that we gave thanks
For starters, to Gordon Banks
Safer than any money lender
The greatest ever, last defender
And to George Cohen, dependable and solid
No vices, no nasty tackles, nothing squalid
Ray Wilson, another stalwart and just as shy
Utterly determined, not to let anyone by
At number four, Nobby Styles
Brought oh so many smiles
Off the pitch, he was renowned for his big framed glasses
But on it, he was famed for his crunching tackles and timely passes
The elder of the two Charlton brothers, wor Big Jack
A leggy giant, steady as a rock, at the back
And Bobby Moore, the very mention
Brings everyone, to attention
He’s the one who got to lift, the Jules Rimet
Much to Germany’s, utter dismay
Little Alan Ball, with his high pitched call
Ran himself ragged, into the ground
And a new young star, had been found
Roger Hunt, relentless up front
Often the forgotten man
But not by any discerning fan
(nor by Jimmy Greaves, his omission, still peeves)
At number nine, Bobby Charlton, the younger brother
A human dynamo, he could strike a ball, like no other
Geoff Hurst : lungs burst
As we cheered goals one, two and three
And celebrated his hat-trick, with emotional glee
And last, but not least, Martin Peters
Even back then, he probably measured in metres
Famous for being so far ahead of his time
Luckily for us, he was still in his prime

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 And as for the leader, Alf Ramsey, in true Churchillian style
Bucked his detractors and stuck to his beliefs, all the while
Far too much of a gentleman, to give a two-fingered salute
But oh how we hanker, for another manager to follow suit!

Notes

Greatest ever British team? A foregone conclusion, surely?
Individually, you could pick better players –
But it’s results that count

PS
Given the initial inspiration, Winnie just had to feature too!
