Plastic Shinpads

A pair of plastic shinpads,
With Ian Rush’s name on them,
Stuck with velcro
To the inside of my socks,
Slipping, they kept
Slipping down, falling out.
“How does Ian Rush play in these?”
I would shout.

And I remember,
A pair of plastic shinpads,
With Ian Rush’s name on them,
Stuck in the bin.
No goals,
A pair of bruised shins.
I felt cheated
I never could play like him.
