It happens in stages;
first the sceptical, bordering-on-misogynist,
‘this will be easy’ amusement.

Next comes the panic,
the gradual realization that they
cannot score.

So they up their game
and generally still can’t score
and so comes the next stage

Resentment. Pure resentment
borne of false humiliation –
they can’t beat a girl.
¶ 5

Then, at last, as the whistle blows
respect.
And it took 45 minutes.
