I like to look at the way
The defeated players react
While jubilation encircles them.

When the whistle blows
Like statues frozen
By the end of play.

Sometimes they are standing
Maybe applauding their fans
Sometimes they are lying
Exhausted and regretful.

A few from the other team
Offer a shake of the head
And a sympathetic look
In gestures sporting.

The mud on the shorts
And sweat stained shirts
Messy with nothing to show
For strenous efforts.

We learn more from failing
Though on that night
