Ten Seconds

We were holding our own
Till the ten second mark,
When an audible groan
Could be heard round the park.
For no-one had lost
E’en a droplet of sweat
When the ball, quickly crossed,
Ended up in the net.

We were doing quite well
For nine seconds or so,
As we struggled to quell
The Cobh über-schnell show,
But with ten seconds gone,
‘Gainst the run of the play,
The Ramblers’ sun shone
And our sky turned to grey.

It was under control
With nine seconds gone by,
No threat to our goal
In this Eircom League tie.
But a cross ball, deflected
By mischievous ghosts
Ended up unexpected
Between our two posts.

Nine secs on the clock
And we’d kept them at bay,
But our hopes took a knock
When the tenth one took sway.
As the Cobhmen all roared,
We looked up with a frown
To discover they’d scored
As we’d been sitting down.
