Looking up from the obituary
Of another goalless draw
You said:
I remeber the Cup Final of 1954.

Turning down the noise
Of another dismal quiz show
You smiled:
We were the first to have a telly
In our street, you know.

We heaved it into the corner
And sat, proud as Kings, on the settee.
You shook your head sadly:
Everyone in the street crammed in to watch.
Everyone, that is, except me.

I’d switched it on early,
Then made sandwiches while it slowly warmed up.
You laughed:
Then I couldn’t squeeze back in the room
And when I did- we’d won the Cup!
