The Day The Posts Went Up

The field I played upon
It was Wembley and Hampden Park,
I played all day until the eve
I played until the dark.
Cricket season I found too long,
Football blood was far too strong.
But I persevered throughout those months
Just to be one of the boys,
I needed more I wanted to score
And feel goal-celebrating joys.
I couldn’t wait for the starting date
When the leather ball was aired,
My boots were clean I have always been
One who was best prepared.
Then men from the council came
With goals loaded up on a lorry,
Cricket season was near the end
I admit I wasn’t sorry.
On Thursday the lines were marked
Inside a flame was sparked,
It was like I’d won the FA Cup
The day the posts went up.
