In this old ball-game’s Hall of Fame,
they stand:
the Legendary Number Nines,
captured
in their prime;
muscles flexed
and boots
outstretched;
chests filled
with pride
and goals.

Where have they gone,
those Legendary Number Nines?
Booted out
before their time.
They held our hopes
in their feet:
those bygone men
whose best shots
are netted,
quietly
in our dreams.
