The Only Dream
¶ 1

You were always truly magic with a football at your feet
You would play it in the field, in the playground, in the street
Your dreams were just like anyone’s, but you might see them through
And as you beat me once again, I’d wish to be like you.

So now the scouts have seen you
We knew one day they would
They’ve signed you up, you’re on the way
Your hard work’s coming good.
So we all think you’re lucky
But the thought’s there, in my brain
“As quickly as they snatched you,
They can drop you down again.”

But you’re not gonna listen
You deserve your new-found fame
They don’t know there’s nothing else for you
This is the only game.
Your dad walked out – oh, years ago
Mum barely knows you’re there
You pretend that you’re not bothered
And your fan club sure don’t care.

They don’t know that when no-one would have you
You’d spend hours kicking stones at a wall
That’s where all that great skill developed
You’re not really so lucky at all.
But still I just can’t help myself
When I realise your dreams might come true…
God, I’m jealous
Course I’m jealous
Everyone’s jealous of you.
