We used to be

When cup ties against Swansea city
would have been a mere formality,
when players here prospered and grew
back in the days, when Arsene knew,
it was an easy, easy thing
to love a team that would often win

It was easier on the heart and head
not to anticipate games with dread
I look back on this time and smile,
about when our biggest problem was Rob Styles,
and not the fact that we have become
a team who are not as much fun.

We sit and watch hand in hand
neither of us ever planned
to support this kind of frustrating team
but how could anybody dream
that a team who didn’t lose for 49 games
could cause their fans this much pain?

We used to be that team, he said,
the one you would rather play anyone else instead,
the team nobody wanted theirs to draw
criticised for the 1-0 bore,
Pires, Vieira, Henry, Eboue…
and look at the team we have today.

It’s true that we aren’t as strong,
and yet none of the love is gone,
us gooners moan, complain and whine,
and still I know, this team is mine,
I rage but then to my dismay,
I realise I love them anyway.
