Why I Play on the Left Wing

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Because Marxists remember left wing players who went on strike,
Like Billy Merdith,
Players who translated the collectivism of the pitch and of the team
Into everyday life,
And who saw themselves as part of the mundane life of ordinary people
Rather than as stars in the firmament;
Because Marxists enunciate words like strike, communist and socialist
In a soft sibilant manner,
Rather than as swear words demanding a tone of righteous indignation
As on the news;
Because left wing players believe in justice, liberty and equality,
But, for all;
Because Marxist football demonstrates that profit is stolen wages,
And so that property is theft,
Thereby proving that you have every moral right to trespass
On the pitch of the rich;
Because Marxist football proves that while Capitalism might be a great idea in theory,
It cannot work out in practice,
How can an individual simultaneously spend more, save more and earn less?
Because left wingers oppose war,
But remember the unknown soldier and his wife and her life and times,
Because the word peasant is not a pejorative,
When Adam passed and Eve scored who was then on the directors’ board?
Because we know our Bunyan,
Who knew that tramps in Tudor Merrie England,
“Were kicked to and fro like footballs in the wind”
And knew, as we do,
That the law locks up the man or woman
Who plays at football on the common
But leaves the greater villain free
Who steals the football from you and me.
