Every us would be a them,
every shout would bring on déjà vu.

Without you
I’d have had no posters on my bedroom wall.
I’d hope for other things and maybe achieve them.
I’d have no excuses to make.
I’d long for distraction from everything else
and would plan unnoticeable acts of unseen terrorism.

Without you
Conversations with my father would be shorter.
Hot dogs would taste differently.
My memories would fade without their weekly fixative bath.
I’d spend my Saturdays shopping, car washing
or thinking.
I’d be a millionaire, having nurtured an entrepreneurial spirit
through a Saturday job.
I’d read the back pages, not scavenge amongst them.

Without you
The corner of my spare room that cossets my programme collection
would let itself out to a pot plant.
The 2.59 weekend express that runs on the tracks through my veins
would be derailed.

Without you
I’d have nowhere to take my unborn children.

Without you
My dreams would just be dreams
and a new car park would appear where historifans would pay homage
to a small memorial plaque.
