A Game of Two Haves

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The football of my childhood
When both ball and pitch were brown
Was a game where honest men stood strong
And wouldn’t let you down

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 It wasn’t always pretty
But it always had its soul
As these brave men, they gave their all
To score or stop a goal

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 They did it not for money
They earned the same as any man
They did it for the club they loved
They did it for the fans

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Now football as we know it
Has changed a lot, you’ll know
As games are played whatever time
Will suit the TV show

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Now players may be fitter
And faster and more skilled
But I can’t help thinking to myself
That football’s heart’s been killed

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 While money from the telly means
Bigger clubs just buy the men
Who’ll come to them for the right price
Then up and off again

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 But smaller clubs are struggling
They fight to stay alive
Avoiding relegation is
As high as they can strive

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Now football’s changed in many ways
In ways we never thought
But a game of two haves still remains,
The haves and the have-nots
