A Game of Two Haves
¶ 1

The football of my childhood
When both ball and pitch were brown
Was a game where honest men stood strong
And wouldn’t let you down

It wasn’t always pretty
But it always had its soul
As these brave men, they gave their all
To score or stop a goal

They did it not for money
They earned the same as any man
They did it for the club they loved
They did it for the fans

Now football as we know it
Has changed a lot, you’ll know
As games are played whatever time
Will suit the TV show

Now players may be fitter
And faster and more skilled
But I can’t help thinking to myself
That football’s heart’s been killed

While money from the telly means
Bigger clubs just buy the men
Who’ll come to them for the right price
Then up and off again

But smaller clubs are struggling
They fight to stay alive
Avoiding relegation is
As high as they can strive
¶ 8

Now football’s changed in many ways
In ways we never thought
But a game of two haves still remains,
The haves and the have-nots
