The Greatest Game We Never Saw

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 the greatest game we never saw
and just our luck to be top drawer
surpassing all that fell before
the greatest game we never saw

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 beyond the sofas and the homes
reduced to radios and phones
or pubs more used to groans and moans
we listened in – confused – alone

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 no Christmas package came from Santa
no pre-match nerves or fam’ly banter
but those few folk who had Setanta
they watched the lads win at a canter

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 we searched for cov’rage ev’rywhere
terrestially reduced to care
for Lost In Austen or to stare
no highlights even in my hair

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 while we were all convinced and sure
of same ol’ England like before
and could not quite believe the score
the greatest game we never saw

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 that greatest game we never saw
and just our luck to be top drawer
surpassing all that fell before
the greatest game we never saw
