Independence Day

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Finally I’ll have to accept
that Mr Independent
would rather be in a tent
than with me.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 And I am impotent
to prevent his absence;
look, the seat alongside
me is free.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Some would say it’s common sense,
this desire for independence,
but he’s been coming to games
since he was three.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 No more sitting on the fence
or half time visits to the gents;
no more spending fifty pence
(or should that be 50p?)

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 In the face of all that pent
up emotion I’m a spent
force.
And I can vent my spleen,
but he’s no longer keen.
Instead he’s a has been,
an independent teen
if you see what I mean.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 So I’ll have to accept
that Mr Independent
would much rather watch Kent
on TV.

Notes

My 16 year old son has decided that he doesn’t want to come to Swindon games any more; I have to pretend I don’t care, but he’s been coming with me for 10 years & I’ll miss him. Luckily I’ve got 2 other boys who are going to keep the faith – for the time being at least.
