Women just see twenty-two muddy kits to wash
Sweaty men in baggy shorts
Disrespect and dirty tackles
On a pitch where no manners are taught

Women see a round ball
Of little consequence
Men see an entire world

Women hear noise
Two tribes shouting abuse
Boos, jeers and whistles

Men just see the euphoria
The glory – a winning goal
It’s the only time they hug their mates
Without feeling embarrassment
¶ 5

That overwhelming joy
When 25,000 other people are shouting and cheering
With your voice
Dreaming your dreams
Sharing your fears
Football fans are not strangers

Keep us sane
And send us mad
