we have no expectations
we’re slipping down the scale
we’ve failed to practise in the past
by practising to fail
and as the ratios decrease
of ‘English’ players here
we still rely on passion
and playing cavalier

we made our group look difficult
just like we always do
midst anthems bathed in drifting smoke
the trepidation grew
by forty minutes I was done
exhausted clutching straws
we’re forty years on from that day
and looking at a draw

you know those games where time speeds by
before you even blink
when you throw everything you can
remote or kitchen sink
into the box of your front room
or lap top or your phone
or in some pub or at the match
or listening on your own

until that sweet sweet moment
when you at last break through
and then you calm a little
but anxious edgy too
when watching Hodgson doesn’t help
the stress across his brow
but like so many many times

and now Brazil but hey who cares
the merchandise furore

downplay our humble chance
at least we know we’re gonna be
invited to the dance

we’ll have no expectations
we’ve slipped way down the scale
we’ve failed to practise in the past
by practising to fail
and as the ratios grow worse
our ‘English’ players here
we’ll still rely on passion
and playing cavalier
