Final Ties

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Our final appearances
Lined up against the Pennines
Like distant chimney stacks
Preston nineteen sixty-four, Burnley sixty-two
Blackburn nineteen –sixty, Bolton fifty-eight.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Memories, like stray balloons
Drifting goalwards,
And that massed community,
Stilled,
Singing “Abide with me”.
These I replay
And wonder if those faded scenes have finally had their day.

Notes

This is a nostalgic poem about the last time the less affluent clubs of industrial Lancashire appeared in a Wembley Cup Final. It is rooted in my memories of seeing Preston North End there in 1964.
