Raith Rovers Coca Cola Cup 1994

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 From near and far we all returned
To see the boys take on the bhoys
Brother, father, son and nephews
We all met up to head North together

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The night before was our preparation
A few wee drinks and then some more
At least we all had a guid night oot
Was what we thought as morning broke

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Around the town the Q’s assembled
As buses, vans, and cars picked up
Lots of laughs as we headed to Glasgow
Hiding the fear of a goals disaster

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Into Ibrox we all assembled
Filling our quota and then some more
All around were friends and faces
I hadn’t seen since games in the 60’s

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 A tumultuous roar as the teams came out
Tears of joy at just being there
And then the surprise with 15 minutes gone
One goal up and Celtic stunned

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Take the photo quickly Dad
Capture the moment the scoreboard shows
Sure enough 15 minutes later
Celtic score to make things even

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 With 6 minutes left they score again
That’s it now is what we thought
But out of the blue, came Gordon Dalziel
To shock the Celts, with a goal from heaven

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Extra time brought no further goals
So penalties it was, good effort we thought
To our disbelief Rovers scored all 5
And up stepped McStay to make it even

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 What happened next was just a blur
As Thompson saved and Kirkcaldy erupted
The journey home the best trip ever
Stopped in Dunfermline to let the Pars know

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 20 years have passed and it’s now a memory
Did it really happen I still ask myself
Yes it did and Bayern were next
And even then we showed no fear

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 But that was then and now is now
Back where we have always been
Struggling in front of impatient crowds
But memories and hope will keep us going

Notes

Raith Rovers only significant cup win in over 100 years, beating Celtic on penalties at Ibrox after extra time, November 1994. I followed them as a youngster, but now live in England. Drove up with my brother and our sons who were 8 and 10 at the time. Our elderly Dad came to the match with us, the only time the 3 generations of us were ever at a football match together.

Editor’s note:
Welcome Fred, and thanks for sharing that special moment, one that is still wished for by fans of many other teams!

And be sure to check out the poems on this site by Hugh Morris, who is also a lifelong Raith fan.
