from the top of the scaffolding end
struck a middle-aged lady
in the second row
on the side of her face

and wafted it around

another man did the same

a semi-drunk dribbled his abuse
in my general direction

a pair of gendarmes
and a fireman approached
and stood
watching.

When the final whistle went
the scarfed multitude
slowly and quietly descended
the steep makeshift steps
crossed the bridge
and hurried away.

who went down.
