A Footballers Tale

Under a stone at the local park
An earwig slept in the cold and dark
But later on he awoke to the sound
Of boys playing football, running around.
The Earwig watched the exciting match
And dreams of glory began to hatch.
So later that evening Joe found a ball
And practised his shooting against a wall.

He dribbled with ease with all of his feet
And helped by his pincers his skill was complete.
One week later the teams came back
They played for a while, but then with a crack
The striker went down and yelled in pain
With ankle twisted and nasty sprain.
They carried him off and play was stopped
But Joe was ready and over he hopped.

“I can play football” he squeaked from the ground
But no one could hear so he climbed on a mound
This time he shouted “I’d like to play please”
And this time they heard him with relative ease.
All of the players gaped in surprise
at the six booted fellow, and all rubbed their eyes.
“An earwig?” said one “Your having a laugh,
come on chaps, lets go for the bath.”

“No wait” said another “Give him a try”.
“All right” said the first with a shrug and a sigh
So with nothing to lose they gave him a trial
Joe was impressive and showed them his style.
His dribbling control was frankly wizard
And his storming speed was like a blizzard
The team were agog as he shot for the net
He scored the best goal they’d ever seen yet,

As time went by, he became a key player
With no games missed he proved a stayer
The team played well and were high in the league
They played with zest, no sign of fatigue
Slowly but surely they made their way up
To get within reach of the F.C. Cup.
The final was only two weeks away
But soon it arrived, that crucial day.

Joe and the team were nervous and spinning
But the F.C. Cup was there for the winning
The other team were a competent crew
But Joe had a plan and he knew what to do
From the very start he tackled and passed
Before too long two goals were amassed.
But the other team came back with two more
The half time score remained as a draw.

But the Captain was hobbling, visibly so
As he entered the tunnel, a terrible blow
A ligament torn meant now he was lame
The doctor confirmed the end of his game.
“No matter” he said, “Just bring on the sub.
and I nominate Joe to skipper the club.
The team gave a cheer and Joe coloured up
This could mean Joe would be lifting the Cup.

The Coach and manager waited within
And greeted their team with confident grin
“You all did great” was the message for all
“But don’t lose sight of the Cup or the ball!
Go out and win and complete your dream
And Joe, we expect you to lead the team.”
Joe was now Captain for all to see
And he vowed to lead them to victory.

The referee blew for the second half
Joe kicked off but got kicked on the calf
He hobbled in pain on his other five feet
But he soldiered on with a match to complete.
Now Joe was a target, again he was kicked
But a red card was given by Referee Strict.
With one player down, the opponents were seething
But Joe played on, though heavy his breathing.

But then disaster struck for Joe
The other team scored with minutes to go.
At three two down it didn’t look good
So he rallied the team and they understood.
The clock was ticking as Joe crossed the ball
The team ran forward and he made the call
The ball came back with no time for folly
And he whacked it in with a solid volley.

So the end of the game was level at three’s
The teams lined up for penalties.
Very soon after the board said 4-4
One penalty each to settle the draw.
The other team Captain ran up from afar
But slipped as he shot and the ball hit the bar.
This was Joe’s moment, he stood at the spot
With his pincer for balance he casually shot.

The crowd went bananas, they jumped up and down
They grinned and shouted and shook the town
The whistle was blown and the team went mad
For this was the moment they’d wanted so bad
They lifted Joe up, the star of the game
An Earwig called Joe had risen to fame.
A lap of honour was made for the crowd
And they all sang the song that made him so proud!
