Football’s called the working class ballet
There’s something about its style of play
That calls to primeval instincts deep below
Inherited from our ancestors, centuries ago

“But it’s just a game”… is the way you think?
Then Shakespeare is no more than paper and ink
And violins are a mixture of catgut and wood
How little of life you have understood!

Football’s not just a sport that people take to,
like cricket or tennis or others they pursue.
It’s inherent in the people, built into the psyche.
A thing of beauty or gut-wrenching anxiety

Find, when through the turnstile you click,
A more splendid life, hurtling with conflict
yet passionate and beautiful in its art.
That challenges the spirit and lifts the heart

Twenty-two players of varying expertise,
Directed by a crowd of twenty thousand referees.
You can discover more about a person
in an hour of play than in a year of conversation

“I fell in love with football as I would later fall
in love with women: suddenly, uncritical,
giving no thought to the pain it would bring”
Football without fans amounts to nothing

Winning in football is not the whole story
Its nothing of the kind, its all about glory,
Beating the lot with style and aplomb
Not waiting for them to die of sheer boredom

“Had football been meant to be played in the air
God would have put grass on the clouds up there”.
The principles Brian Clough would always extol
“It only takes a second to score a goal”

“Football is a simple game made more complex
by those who should know better” Shanks reflects
“It’s not about either the long or short ball”

If the coaches discovered the perfect tactic,
the result would be goalless; who could watch it?
There’s so much crap talked about tactics by those
who barely know how to win at dominoes

Strikers win you games; Defenders win you titles
You play it with your brain; it’s all about angles
There has to be a thought behind every kick
Make it simple, make it accurate and make it quick!

Scoring and an orgasm are about the same
No wonder Pelé thought it was the “Beautiful Game”!
“I spent a lot of money on birds, cars and booze.
The rest I just squandered” were Georgie’s views

A matter of life and death? Of course the answer’s No!
It is far more important, by now you should know
But I think Sir Alex summed it up very well
When he claimed “Football………….. Bloody Hell!!”
