Che cosa qui accada,
Non so parlare d’altro che del gioco del pallon.
Parlo di calcio sveglio,
Parlo di calcio nel sonno,
Parlo di calcio col nonno,
Sor, cugino e fratel.

Nel bagno e sul cesso,
In banca, nei negozi e sul luogo di lavor.
Che febbre mi ha preso?
Che virus m’ha invaso?
Dai piedi fin al naso son bagnato di sudor.

Su reti, cannonieri, maglie, tifo infernal.
Difficile trovare chi a lungo mi sopporta,
Ch’in compagnia mia più d’un’ora riesc’a star.
Ma io avanti tiro, fedel al mio cammino,
E se nisciùn m’ascolta, di pallone so poetar!

I don’t know what’s going on here,
I can’t talk of anything but football.
I talk of football when awake,
I talk of football when asleep,
I talk of football with my grandad,
Sister, cousin and brother.

In the bath and on the loo,
In the bank, in the shops and at the workplace.
What fever has taken hold of me?
What virus has invaded me?
From my feet to my nose I am bathed in sweat.

Around goals, hotshots, shirts, thunderous terrace chants.
It is hard to find anyone who can stand me for long,
Who can stay in my company for more than an hour.
But I carry on, true to my path,
And if no-one will listen to me, I know how to write poems about football!

This is a re-working of some famous lines written by Lorenzo Da Ponte which are sung in the opera The Marriage of Figaro. My Italian version rhymes, my translation does not, so it loses a bit, I am afraid.
