I kinda lost me appetite
As newspaper shots of football millionaires stared me in the face
Having a kick about on a building site? *

It used to be the other way round
Blokes from building sites used to play football
As amateurs at your local ground!

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Red and white flags passed me in the street
Blowing proudly in the wind
But excitement and expectancy?
Both decided sadly to stay in

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 I caught some World Cup television ads for ….? **
In gorgeous vibrant colour
Made from the proceeds of Third World sweat
Where workers toil in squalor

But I missed the bus
Adidas just drove it by
Missing out all of us

I can’t find it can you?
For weeks on end me and me friends in days gone by
Were in the World Cup fever queue

That we all had years ago
When all around was World Cup sounds
On the t.v and radio

I went to find the pitch
A man from Xerox said to me
“This game’s just for the rich”

We tell them what to say on cue
Then we give em a cheque and they perform
Like animals in the circus…. do”!

“I’m listening to the French national anthem in the Parc Des Princes
In the World Cup final on the greatest day of my life
I look up to the stands filled with corporation clans
There’s not too many real French football fans about”

Sorry to be a downer folks but where’s the buzz?

Some really ultra fantastico stuff posted up here in the last few days all about the heroes and great games at the World Cup from days gone by.

But why is there no buzz like that about todays players and games?

I’m trying really hard to get in the groove for a true football fans idea of heaven that’s coming up, but it’s cos I am a true fan of the game I have to be honest and ask again where’s the buzz? It should be here by now shouldn’t it?

*The England squad having a bonding session at the new unfinished Wembley. There’s a joke there somewhere but it escapes me!

** What are those ads about?

*** The nickname given to French midfielder Didier Deschamps by Eric Cantona.

Deschamps words from an interview on the way that commercialism had dictated who got seats for the World Cup final France v Brazil, if you read other interviews and watch the excellent documentary made on that game they’ll tell you about sponsors trying to get Big Ron out on to the field in a Brazil shirt for that match at all costs no matter what his state of health!

Deschamp goes on to say that the French people only really cheered victory in the streets of Paris after the game cos not that many could get seats for the actual match cos the corporate suits had taken up most of the allocation.
