A Damp Squib Or What?
¶ 1

Ah the red and white flags shine brightly
Up and down the street
As the day draws near when we find out how good we are
With a football at our feet

And the redtops build our hopes up
In unity for the team
As the nation puts the kettle on
To get up a head of steam

Ah but one supermarket basket case
Is but a dampened squib
As Tesco forbids the cross of St George on its fleet
Who do they think that they’re trying to kid?

The pavements painted red and white
As flags hang out of flats
Whilst all the fans can harbor dreams
That we’ll bring the World Cup back

Neighbors speak like doctors
As they discuss the fifth metatarsal
Whilst the postman’s in a Beckham shirt
Delivering their parcels

Ah but one supermarket basket case
Is but a dampened squib
As Tesco forbids the cross of St George on its fleet
Who do they think that they’re trying to kid?

As tee-shirts and cola bottles
Remind us of who we are
The fans spirit starts to bond as one
Cross the country near and far

Whilst prams and light weight pushchairs
Adorned in nations flags
Let all the passers by in the street
Know “We’re right behind the lads”!

Ah but one supermarket basket case
Is but a dampened squib
As Tesco forbids the cross of St George on its fleet
Who do they think that they’re trying to kid?

As we pin up the wall charts at work
And decorate the house
The radio blares out moving World Cup tunes
Religiously on the hour

The betting shop offers terrific odds
On who’ll win the cup
With its windows adorned in all nations flags
To help you make your mind up

Ah but one supermarket basket case
Is but a dampened squib
As Tesco forbids the cross of St George on its fleet
Who do they think that they’re trying to kid?
