Pogba at eighty nine mill
We’re assured is an absolute steal
Though a red faced Govan knight
Who had the foresight to bid him bye bye
Will be gutted he sold him for zilch!

When you’re chasing the game Against Barca, a task on it’s own, Hoping (or praying) as you do To at least try and stay in the tie. Can anyone explain Or am I the only one who noticed The sacred pitch at The Camp Nou Appearing to get bigger in front of my eyes?

Six more points, then the title is ours Then how come I don’t feel elated? Well I’ve been watching Manish On after Match of The Day For an hour and a half of The Championship Where a real excitement’s portrayed In front of (we can afford it) supporters. I know there are those Who Love […]

After watching A horde of track suited Clearly overweight dads Wearing expensive trainers Shouting and screaming (I’d like to say cheering) and often goading on their children During Saturday, or Sunday morning football matches. Where a bystander Would think Dad had played the game Or coached at a professional level. I’m taken back (smiling) To […]

On a bench By the lake in St James Park She said she felt They’d been drifting apart. “Oh and I’ve been seeing a geezer, He’s a Gooner,” she callously said She may as well have stabbed The poor kid through the heart. She strode off toward the tube station quickly Leaving him there on […]

Top Cat makes a blinding save Zorro scores a lucky goal It’s a smash and grab win kinda game and three points at Loftus Road. We’re looking like a jockey On an ‘orse with nothing left As we pick the Rangers pocket Nicking bragging rights from them.

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
