Put your hands together on minute 7
For a little Angel now gone to Heaven.
On all 4 sides of the ground applaud.
Make it loud like a goal’s been scored!
If sitting by Utd fans, forget the divide.
For just one […] -

I see no escape, just an imposing fence.
The numbing pain I feel is now so intense.
I feel a surge of pressure, rolling like a wave.
Is this terrace taking me to my grave? It’s time to close my eyes, I […]

A little message to our Egyptian king Mo.
If it’s all down to wages, then please go.
When so rich, what’s a few extra grand?

The result for me tomorrow takes a back seat.
I won’t lose any sleep over a Cup Final defeat.
Replace our red banners with yellow and blue.

Another takeover, another sad case.
An ugly scar, across a beautiful face.
Greed is a monster, that is for sure.
Now it’s happening, more and more.
All part and parcel of footys decline.

Gloveless keepers, a pitch full of sand.
An offside rule, simple to understand!
3 men in charge, no need for any more.
It was beautiful then, win, lose or draw.Tackles flew in, on the goalkeeper too!

‘Knighted’ by the Kop, no need of sword.
My boyhood hero, with every goal scored.
On my red jersey, I wore the number 8.
A record maker, a legend, an all time great.
He helped achieve Bill Shankly’s […] -

It’s not possible for Liverpool to play behind ‘closed doors’
We might not hear them but there will always be 96 roars.
And the spirit of other Reds, ashes buried in the kop goal.
Anfield can never be empty […] -

He would have been 50, God bless you Paul.
He died at 19, he went to the match, that’s all.
4 helium balloons in the Anfield breeze sway.
Beneath the eternal flame, lit all night and day.
2 Birthday balloons […] -

Can a Fox cry, one did today?
Five lives tragically taken away.
A crying Fox is something new.
I shed a tear alongside him too.As a red I cheered your fairy tale.
Brilliant to see the top dogs […] -

But now LFC have decided to sell.

Coming from nowhere out of the sky.
Down from Heaven a feather to drift.
An Angel is near by, a loved ones gift.Into the face of a child a feather blew.

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
