Ancelotti’s Blue and White Army
They said we were ungrateful
When we sacked our Portuguese.
It wasn’t nothing personal –
He’d brought us to our knees.
His string of poor results
Had us reaching for the Valium,
So we showed him where the door was,
And sent for an Italian.
His name is Ancelotti,
It has a pleasant ring,
Though some say that he’s potty
To sign up for this gig.
Nil Satis Nisi Optimum,
He sure knows what that means –
Just look at all the trophies won
Displayed on his CV.
Let’s hear no more of Koeman,
Martinez, Silva, Moyes,
Henceforth the Toffees will be known
As Ancelotti’s Boys.
We’re Carlo’s Blueclad fanti,
We’re gonna up the ante,
And though he’s not a Tuscan,
We’ll toast his name in Chianti!

Mr X’s Blue and White Army
They said we were ungrateful,
When we sacked Allardyce.
Now Marco Silva cannot say
That he’s been treated nice.
But football is a business,
For sentiment no room,
So poor old Marco had to go,
‘Cos relegation looms.
“Nil Satis Nisi Optimum?
What is this joke, this jest?
No satisfaction do you get,
You’ll never be the best.”
To such jibes we have long grown used,
Our critics never rest.
Yet still we cry “Come On You Blues!”
With unabated zest.
We Bluenoses are loyal,
As faithful as they come.
As true as any you might find
In London, Leeds or Brum.
We’ve had much to put up with,
Yet we don’t stay away,
For Everton we shall support
Until we’re in our graves.

Mersey misery for Blues
Liverpool 5-2 Everton
For the Hillsborough families
A show of solidarity
Three decades of resilience
Courage and much dignity
Six goals at half time
Big Divock hits a double
Keane and Richarlison up the Blues
Shaqiri and Mane spell trouble
Sadio squanders a pair
Gini makes Anfied drool
P45 for Marco Silva?
A club record for Liverpool

The Park
Goodison Park means at least good park
All the stadiums under the heaven are The heaven’s Parks
And should Everton leave Goodison will it stay as
most loved Park ?
The Good Goodison Park
Blue and White Army
We’re an army blue and white,
Our hopes are high, our prospects bright.
On this, another Season’s eve,
Once more we truly do believe.
We represent our city,
Well, half of it at least.
There is another team, in red,
They’re not our cup of tea.
Our stadium’s name is Goodison,
A proper football ground –
Not Emirates or Etihad,
Or some such global brand.
Our keeper’s England’s Number One,
His derby clanger cost us dear –
Those hands no longer seem so safe,
A god once, now a mortal mere.
Nil Satis Nisi Optimum,
We mean it, it’s no joke,
Though sceptics scoff, sneer, say we’re nuts,
And ask us what we’ve smoked.
And so the glory-hunt goes on,
Though some may us deride.
Come on, you boys in blue and white,
Restore our dented pride!

Everton came back in 1994
It was not George Orwell’s 1984
It was 1994 indeed
Everton manager Mike Walker
was thinking about Las Vegas
There was Wimbledon Football Club
Yes, Wimbledon were in
the Premier League
Very very sad news were coming from
Kigali
It was MAY
It was ten years added to
Orwell”s 1984
Wimbledon took a 2-0 lead at Goodison
With 2-0 to Wimbledon as it stood Everton had been relegated
The controversial penalty, a fantastic goal
by Welshman Barry Horne and one Graham Stuart
goal secured Everton survival
Was it ORWELL”s 1994 ?
Everton away in Rotterdam
The Blue Sailors
and the new moonlight dribblers
crossed their fingers for Everton
The crisis of the mid eighties had its bitter and bright days in many ways
Was it the year of LIVE AID ?
Was it the year of Howard’s dribblers ?
Moonlight dribblers and Rotterdam dribblers
Rotterdam dribblers and moonlight dribblers
The Blues from Merseyside lifted
The UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup
But it was three years before
the Dutch national team ruled
There is Notre Dame the famous Paris cathedral
There is Rotterdam
There is Everton history
There was once the year
1985
Trevor Steven this almost unsung hero
was Everton’s Rotterdam dribbler
Gary Stevens an efficient full back
Going back in 1985
this was really sweet Toffee’s champaign period
One moonlight dribbling era
of the bitter mid eighties
The rainbow ray lights
of that time
The worldwide recognized Everton Football Club
brightened our lives
Derby on Mersey
Liver birds have seen Liverpool
Liverpool had been known by them
Alan Ball fans communicated
using red telephone boxes
having Blue soul
Every new Derby on Mersey
is the eventful opportunity
to talk about any past Derby on Mersey
18 September 1948 with the record attendance
Nearly 80.000 fans saw the match at Goodison
Today, there will be one,
Were you at the match when
Everton had had Danny Cadamarteri?
Were you at the match when
Everton had Maurice Johnston?
Pat Nevin, one of the Mersey Derby scorers
of the early 1990’s loved The two Blue Colors
One of Chelsea and one of the Toffees
Kevin Sheedy, Irish Blue wizard
Inevitable Sharpie
Inevitable Tony Cottee
Andrei !
The generation who was young in the early 1990’s
who saw something before millenials
Today there is Everton v Liverpool
WAYNE CLARKE- will be scoring today ?
Or who is today’s WAYNE CLARKE for
this derby game?MISTER SIGURDSSON GOODISON today
Or if you had known him, sometimes
the best was
ROY Vernon, EVERTON
who loved the stoicism of the fans
The Years Slip By
A new season comes and we’re all filled with hope.
Hope, hope and the years slip by.
Soon it is May, and we can but mope.
Mope, mope as the years slip by.
Players are bought and players are sold.
Bought, sold for a fee sky-high.
But never a sign of bronze, silver or gold,
Out in the cold as the years slip by.
Managers hired and managers fired.
Hired, fired in the blink of an eye.
But this only serves to increase our ire.
Aye, ire, you heard me right.
Pledges are made and promises broke.
Made, broke like a child’s cheap toy.
Our once mighty Club is the butt of the joke.
Joke, joke and we can’t reply.
There’s much talk of Projects, Rome not in day built.
Build, build, yet the years roll by.
And we can’t help weeping at milk that’s been spilt.
Spilt, spilt and our tears won’t dry.
Can anyone tell us, does anyone know?
Where, where does the answer lie?
When once again we with pride will glow?
Glow, glow with our heads held high!

Marco Silva’s Blue and White Army
They said we were ungrateful,
When we sacked Allardyce.
Well, truth be told, we can’t deny,
It wasn’t very nice.
But football is a business,
For sentiment no place.
So poor Big Sam, he had to go,
And swiftly be replaced.
Nil Satis Nisi Optimum-
We mean it, it’s no jest.
Third, fourth, fifth, sixth mean nothing,
We’ve got to be the best.
Tradition? It’s a millstone.
Ambition? It’s a cross.
We’ve not been Champs for thirty years,
But now with this new Boss…
His name is Marco Silva,
He’s worth his weight in gold.
(Or so we hope, let’s see next May
If “Silvaware” we hold.)
We’re Marco’s Blue Militia,
From the Fab Four’s place of birth,
And there’s really no more need be said,
For the whole world knows our worth.

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
