A Cup of Spice n’ Sauce haiku

fairy tales must end
Norton made their fans so proud
they can stand up tall

adding spice and sauce
to a first round packed with thrills
as Worcester march on
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Cup dreams dashed aside
Forest Green and Coventry
focus on the league

scenes we thought had gone
tired legs and fans so close
well done Warrington

never mind the gap
Gloucestershire are in the ‘hat’
come on Chelt’nham Town

Belfast’s Favourite Son~George Best haiku
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
like the moon
you were our first superstar
lost in your own world
the Best gift of all
you here weaving your magic
why do great things end?
memories on film
long black hair and stunning skill
Best was something else
playing your great joy
training something that you did
in between drinking
Britain’s favourite girls
tabloids favourite headline boy
Belfast’s favourite son

Marathon Haiku
Penalty shootout
Of historic proportions
Not good for the nerves
Rivalry (haiku)
Manuel animus.
Now Jose won’t talk to us.
Blues are now a mini-bus?
League Football Starts the Ball Rolling-haiku
New football season
the Premier League can wait
football league kicks off.
Huddersfield get thrashed
Bournemouth put four in their net
Robbins gets the sack.
The once mighty Leeds
now in the Championship
lose down at the Den.
Psychos Notts Forest
beat a beleaguered Blackpool
a full City ground.
Wolves verses Norwich
the Canaries not chirpy
their ten men go down.
The Sky Bet League One
Bristol City beat the Blades
three points on the road.
MKDons two down
but come back to beat the Gills
put four in their net.
Coventry City
level on ninety minutes
lose injury time.
The Sky Bet League Two
Luton Town up from non-league
victors at Carlisle.
The Shrimps of Morecambe hit three
at Dagenham and Redbridge
sit at top of table.
Pompey on the road
a draw in the west country
one each at Exeter.
Community Shield
Arsenal lift another trophy
Gunners on a roll.
Football has returned
bring on the Premier League
the beautiful game.
The End Haiku
Thirty-two started
The underdogs had a chance
At least for a while
Shootouts decided
The hosts crumbled before fans
Two giants remained
Watching above them
Holding the Golden Ball stood
Christ The Redeemer
Left holding the Cup
Cool German engineering
It’s all over now
Goodbye Brazil–haiku
Brilliant World Cup
sad that it has now ended
football withdrawals.
Germany winners
a well organised machine
worthy champions.
What about the hosts ?
humiliated at home
let in seven goals.
Sadly the divers
they cheated the referees
chief culprit Robben.
Then there was Suarez
who brought his bite to Brazil
he’s chewy Luis.
How about England ?
came with low expectations
and that’s what we got.
What an invention
the magical free kick spray
get behind white line.
United States
were such a joy to behold
they never give up.
Goalkeeping displays
of the highest quality
class between the sticks.
Messi top player ?
sorry but they picked it wrong
Lionel not the best.
So goodbye Brazil
thanks for a wonderful time
what a football treat !
Marching For All Football Clubs-haiku
We march together
thousands wearing the Sky Blue
we will not give in.
Not just for our club
but for clubs everywhere
this is for football.
You’re club could be next
these owners only love cash
only here for money.
They change clubs colours
sack the manager overnight
haven’t got a clue.
They’re loose cannons
treat loyal fans with contempt
bring clubs to their knees.
So we march for all
not just for our beloved club
but for your’s as well.

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys…
Re Man City:
OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.
BTW I’m more Forest Green Rover since 2014 (and Chelsea) these days . I drum and am a standing season ticket holder .

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
