Hosts humbled by Ecuador
Qatar 0-2 Ecuador
Sizzling opening scenes in Qatar
A launch with the good and great
The hosts struggle to get far
After a poor game at Al Bayt
It was all too a comfortable win
Enner Valencia’s double
Had VAR not got in
It would have been a treble
It’s the first time a host
Loses the opening match
Next up on the signpost
Are Senegal and the Dutch

Let’s Boycott Qatar
let’s boycott Qatar
it’s wrong for heaven’s sake
however little diff’rence
our non-viewing will make
let’s go watch a small club
while games go on at home
while they just greenwash endlessly
to justify their own
let’s boycott Qatar
FIFA need to know
let’s protest while it goes on
this ugly blood-drenched show
from BBC to BT
from ITV to Sky
a shame on ev’ry pundit
who does not raise an eye
while in their gushing build ups
you’d never even know
it wasn’t just in Europe
the usual World Cup show
let’s boycott Qatar
their antiquated rules
where power walks and money talks
to make us watch like fools
and shame on those who grab a buck*
to be our pawns out there
bigging up a government
devoid of love and care
for those who suffer in the heat
exploited ’til they fall
and those whose sexuality
will tread a diff’rent call
so let’s boycott Qatar
although they won’t relent
I’ve never ever felt like this
before a tournament
let’s go watch a small club
it isn’t hard to do
and while the big boys have a break
there’s one not far from you
and let us just anticipate
the Women’s World Cup too
and not far off in Germany
the Euros will come through
so let’s boycott Qatar right now
it’s wrong for heaven’s sake
however little diff’rence
our non-viewing will make
let’s go watch a small club
as games go on at home
while they just greenwash endlessly
to justify their own
Qatar ~ Not In My Name
migrant workers meagre wages
lacking in support
dying in the searing heat
in the name of sport
all are welcome so they claim
we know that’s not true
there’s no understanding
of LGBTQ
women made to live within
the power of the men
forced to gain permission
time and time again
if they wish to travel
or study overseas
they must ask their husbands
who do as they please
made to cover shoulders
short skirts are a no
modesty’s insisted on
ev’rywhere they go
living with a set of rules
hard to understand
freedom is a far off dream
in this desert land
will our fans behave out there
will we watch like fools?
in a country following
prehistoric rules
in our once called People’s Game
FIFA once again
choose the most unsuited hosts
but not in my name
Qatar ~ Will We Watch Or Not?
oh dear another four years on
and just like Russia and South Africa
the question arises again
Qatar – will we watch or not
and equally will we write poems about it ?
the football that is
yeah it’s that time guys
you know with or without fan zones
will our fans behave (those who can even afford to go that is)
to another ever-questionable location ?
where yet again disgustingly overpriced tickets flights and packages
make this a rich men and women’s tournament full stop
and where through it all
England try once more to not be too embarassed
so welcome to a Winter World Cup
welcome back to FIFA : (‘Failing In Football Always’?)
let’s say another hello
to their ever-big money-making-and corrupt-ego-fest
welcome to Qatar
a place that controls 13% of global oil reserves
where players will still tackle ridiculous heat
where temperatures reach 25C (77F) in November and December
where human rights barely exist
where being LGBTQ means nothing but a life in fear
where same sex relationships are illegal
where long-unheeded dangerous working conditions
for poorly paid and exploited migrants
has brought suffering debt and death
where alcohol is restricted in public places
and where their strict laws on public behaviour (including swearing)
make us ponder if old-chesnuts like:
‘your support is f****** sh** will make the cut ?
so here we are …as ever…confused angry and disappointed
on how-post Blatter and Platini
our once-People’s Game plummets to further depths
and we ask what’s changed…four years on
but just like Russia and South Africa…
the question arises again
Qatar… will we watch or not
and equally will we write poems about it ?
the football that is
Qatar 2022 – Haiku
I won’t be watching
the World Cup this year, Because,
Well it’s obvious.

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys…
Re Man City:
OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.
BTW I’m more Forest Green Rover since 2014 (and Chelsea) these days . I drum and am a standing season ticket holder .

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.

Hi Denys
With you all the way on the abolition of FA Cup replays. What are they doing to the game?
