Yep! It happened to me, I stood there and cried
I put it over the crossbar, as the goalkeeper dived
All me team-mates went missing,
As the other team hugged and kissed,
One another, after beating us on penalty kicks

The ground wouldn’t open, liked I prayed that it would
I stood there a broken kid, hopeless, no good
Me old man came up, saw me sad and distraught
“Jaysus boy, don’t be crying, it’s just football, that’s all”

“Sorry dad, you’re wrong, it’s not just football, as you say
If it was… just, do you think I’d be feeling this way?
We had victory in sight, it was there in our grasp
I could smell and taste it, now it’s gone, it is past”

As I sadly trudged over to the dressing room
The rank smell of defeat was within
All I could see was red eyes, anger and gloom
From me team-mates who’d knocked their spot kicks in

In a couple of hours, it blew over like showers
Gone and young life carried on
Me old man and me never spoke of it again
That day, when I told him…. you’re wrong

There were other bad days, hard fought wins and great games
When you just shrug yer shoulders and sigh
But when that first one goes wrong, and it’s your shoulders it’s on
There ain’t nothing to do, but just…..cry!
