Blessing in Disguise

I’m five foot-not-a-lot
and I can’t touch the crossbar
without jumping
¶ 3

I’m the shortest in my team too,
mind you, at sixteen I’m also the youngest*
which makes it okay
I suppose.

Because I ain’t the tallest,
I had to compensate for my shortcomings,
find other ways
of guarding the gaping goalmouth.
¶ 5

I had to hone my reflexes
and build up the strength in my legs
to get to those high crosses
and snatch from the heads of lanky forwards,
had to agility-train for those top-corner saves
that the taller keepers don’t have to worry about.
¶ 6

Being a short goalie
just isn’t funny
but I tell you this,
it’s made me work.
