Was called up to the case.
He had to try and find out if
Match-fixing did take place.

He questioned all the players and
He checked their bank accounts,
Looking for a single clue
Upon which he could pounce.

The managers were innocent
Or so they stoutly claimed.
Directors brought solicitors,
In case they were defamed.

Chief Inspector Mulligan
Tried every trick he knew,
And the more that he was stymied, well,
The more suspicions grew.

He bit the bone and chewed the fat
And spat out all the gristle,
And lo! he was rewarded when
The referee blew the whistle.
