Designer Injury

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 First there was Beckham,
bent double in agony;
then Rooney, rolling and writhing
on the Stamford Bridge pitch.
Now ageing Sunday League midfielder
Merriman lies prostrate on
the pitch at another Stanley Park,
a ground a million miles away
from the one which separates
the Reds and the Blues.
Mistimed, bone-crunching tackle
results belatedly in fractured
fourth metatarsal and similar cracks
in third and fifth.
X-ray also reveals chip in cuboid,
but nothing can disguise the fact
that I have a designer injury.

Notes

I am out of action for many weeks after getting clobbered on the foot – hobbling around school on crutches. Can you imagine the reaction of all the kids?! Today I was informed that I had a designer injury!!
