It was a pastel shade
kindofamatch
all whites and yellows
it needed a bit more oomph
and a few more bellows

Too many measured passes
were the order of the day
turgid tactics
stencilled into the players minds

it wasn’t the sort of match
to decorate a finals tournament
when trying to find the net was curtains
due to the well sentried, shuttered blinds

the guardians –
Denmark’s Sorensen, in drab grey
and Holland’s van der Sar, in wishy washy blue;
you longed for a bit more gay
rather than this insipid hue
¶ 7

but then the plasma polyfilla’d transfusion of penalty kicks
transformed into an ice cold cobalt
and with it, Edwin’s steely stare
that communicated to his young team mate –
miss it if you dare!
